TIFFIN — It wouldn’t be sugar-coating things to say Alexis Szivan and Megan Parker were ecstatic about their state-qualifying performances Saturday at the Tiffin Division I regional tournament.

The two Amherst Steele runners whooped it up, hugged and shed tears as they congratulated each other. And who could blame them?

A junior, Szivan earned her second straight state ticket with a second-place time of 18 minutes, 38.24 seconds. Parker was 15th in 19:14.56. The top 16 finishers qualified to Saturday’s state meet at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

Both Amherst girls clocked personal-record times, Szivan by 22 seconds and Parker by 40 seconds.

“I’m so proud of Megan. She’s worked so hard for this,” Szivan said of her teammate.

“Oh my God, I was so bad in junior high,” Parker said. “I was last in most of my races. My coach (Terry Kemp) told me that I needed to be no worse than the top 25 at the mile if you want to go (to state). I was in 20th place and just slowly moved my way up.”

Szivan raced brilliantly, posting the best performance by an Amherst girl at the regional meet since Christine Thompson won in 1994 and finished second in 1995 and ’96.

Szivan positioned herself in the top four before passing, first Sylvania Southview senior Alexandra Wainstei (fourth, 18:49.66), then Perrysburg senior Taylor Monheim (third, 18:41.34), with just over 600 meters left.

“Last year was awful,” Szivan said. “I was the only one from the team that qualified. Now that I have Megan online with me it’s just perfect.”

Last year, Szivan qualified 13th of 16 state qualifiers at Tiffin in 19:18.36. Parker was 121st in 22:36.02.

“Alexis ran a great race,” Kemp said. “For a 6:53 junior high miler (Parker) to get to the state meet is pretty amazing. It’s unreal.”

Keystone sophomore Shannon Wargo was equally thrilled about qualifying to state. She placed 14th for the Division II race in 19:45.22.

“I was in about 16th or 17th place coming up the hill (with 600 meters left),” Wargo said. “My dad and my coach told me I had to go right now. There were three girls in front of me. The last straightaway seemed like forever. When I finally crossed the line, a wave of relief floated over me. It probably won’t totally sink in until I go to bed, but it’s a great feeling.”

Wargo finished only 47th at the 2012 Tiffin regional in 21:20.51.

Avon senior Austin Fasciana and Avon Lake senior Tim Villari captured state berths in the Division I boys race. Fasciana finished eighth in 15:59.67 for his fourth straight state ticket, third for Division I. Villari advanced by taking 13th in a personal-record time of 16:07.40.

“I just thank God for the opportunity and to run well against the best in this region,” said Fasciana. “I’m very fortunate to run at this level all four years.”

An exhausted Villari was also pleased.

“I didn’t breathe for the last 200 meters,” Villari said. “I was so focused sometimes I forgot to breathe. I knew I was on the bubble with a mile left so I had to give everything I could.”
