Brandon Lawrence, 21, pleaded no contest Monday to persistent disorderly conduct, which had been reduced from the original charge of impersonating a police officer, according to Elyria Municipal Court records.
An additional charge of falsification was dropped as a part of the plea deal.
Lawrence was sentenced to 30 days in jail, but 25 of those days were suspended. He also was fined $100 and ordered to perform 40 hours of community service.
Residents of the apartment complex complained to police that Lawrence walked by them holding a can of pepper spray and after he passed them, they reported feeling ill. Some complained they couldn’t breath and some vomited, according to a police report.
Lawrence, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, an auxiliary police badge from Geneva on the Lake and a duty belt with a handgun, handcuffs and pepper spray, initially denied using pepper spray when confronted by police.
