County’s 2nd Jimmy John’s sub shop to open

ELYRIA — An old dilapidated building came down on the corner of South Abbe Road and East Broad Street and now a new restaurant is set to occupy the locale.

Jimmy John’s, a Champaign, Ill.,-based sub sandwich shop, is coming to Elyria, company spokeswoman Mary Trader said. Trader could not provide details on when the restaurant would open, but construction has started on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The restaurant gained approval through the Design Review and Planning commissions over the summer. Plans call for a 1,800-square-foot restaurant.

According to the company website, the Jimmy John’s franchise was started in 1983 by 19-year-old Jimmy John Liautaud, who opened his first sandwich shop in a converted garage near Eastern Illinois University. Since then, the company has grown to more than 1,500 corporate and franchised locations in 42 states.

Lorain County’s only other Jimmy John’s is at 35925 Detroit Road, Avon.
