VERMILION — A house fire in Vermilion on Friday resulted in smoke and flames that could be seen from outside of the structure.

At 12:45 p.m. Friday, the Vermilion Fire Department, with help from Vermilion and Florence township fire departments, responded to a call of a house fire on the 5600 block of South Street.

According to Vermilion Fire Chief Chris Stempowski, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the southwest side of the house, and fire was coming out of the attic.

No one was in the the house and the homeowner was standing outside when firefighters arrived, he said.

The fire departments were able to extinguish the flames within 30 minutes but Stempowski said there was considerable heat and smoke damage in the house as well as fire damage to one side of the building.

Stempowski said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
