Former Elyrian killed in Columbus

ELYRIA — Columbus police are searching for a suspect in the death of a former Elyria man who was severely beaten this past week in Ohio’s capital city.

Columbus police Sgt. Christ Holzhauser of the department’s homicide division confirmed Ryan Wilson, 38, died from injuries sustained in the beating that occurred Wednesday night.

Holzhauser also said police and SWAT officers were actively hunting for a suspect in the man’s death.

Police were hopeful they might be able to locate and apprehend the suspect by today, according to Holzhauser, who said the case is still formally under investigation as an assault rather than a homicide.

A message seeking information from the Franklin County Coroner’s Office was forwarded to Coroner Dr. Jan M. Gorniak, who did not return calls Saturday night.

According to multiple media reports from the Columbus area, Wilson was found by police and emergency medical personnel on McAllister Avenue in the eastern part of the city.

Wilson died Thursday at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, according to a brief statement issued by Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home in Elyria, which is handling arrangements.

Hey Ray.. yeah, we all were really close. Ryan was such a kind hearted guy.. I don’t have to tell you that, because you knew him very well. When Bryon and I walked into ICU at Grant Medical Center and seen Ryan there, I was so taken back. Such a terrible tragedy happened to such a nice guy. Like Bryon and Vanessa stated, he saved five lives Friday night from his organ donations. Was still able to help others, even after his death.
