Hearings set for liquor permit renewals at Lorain bars

Hearings on the renewal of liquor permits for two Lorain bars that city officials are trying to close will be Nov. 26 at the Lorain County Department of Job and Family Services, 42485 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township.

The hearing for the Cotton Club, 1766 E. 28th St., is at 9 a.m. The hearing for Gil’s International Lounge, 1840 E. 28th St., is at 10:30 a.m.

Police say the bars are a magnet for trouble, particularly Gil’s, which opened in 1989. Police said they’ve responded to 59 calls between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1, including numerous fights and two stabbings. Gil’s management said they cooperate with police and eject and ban rowdy customers.

The Cotton Club, which opened in October 2012, serves food and non-alcoholic drinks after bars close at 2:30 a.m. Police accuse the club of serving after hours and said it’s a “known hangout” for gang members, which club owner Anthony Barnhill denies. Barnhill and some club customers say police have unfairly singled out the club and hurt business.
