High school football: Avon gets one player back, loses another

Rhys Ratino

AVON — Avon will get one of its top performers back from injury as it faces Medina Highland in a Division II, Region 4 final on Friday, but will be without another.

Alex Habeeb, Avon’s second leading tackler and a starter at inside linebacker, will return after missing the Eagles’ first two playoff games. Habeeb suffered an MCL strain in his knee in Avon’s win over Bay in Week 10.

But Avon coach Mike Elder said Tuesday that Rhys Ratino, the Eagles’ No. 2 receiver behind Braeden Friss, will miss the game after suffering a head injury in the Eagles’ 24-21 win over Perrysburg on Friday night in Huron.

Ratino has 10 touchdown catches on the season; in his absence on Friday, Zack Torbert caught the game-winning score in the fourth quarter on a pass from Tommy Glenn.

Avon and Highland kick off at 7:30 Friday night at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium in Brunswick.
