Multiple reports Tuesday had the Indians on the verge of signing free-agent outfielder David Murphy to a two-year contract worth around $10 million.
The team offered no official word, but Murphy is expected to be in Cleveland for a physical on Thursday.
Murphy, 32, is an eight-year veteran with a career batting average of .275, 86 home runs and 364 RBIs. The left-handed hitter batted a career-low .220 with 13 homers and 45 RBIs in 142 games for the Rangers this year.
Murphy could platoon with Drew Stubbs in right field or take Stubbs’ place altogether. Stubbs, 29, is eligible for arbitration after hitting .233 with 10 homers and 45 RBIs in 146 games for the Indians.
