Lorain man pleads not guilty to assault

ELYRIA — A Lorain man who is facing an attempted murder charge for an alleged assault in August pleaded not guilty Thursday in Lorain County Court of Common Pleas.

Mario Ayala Jr., 27, is facing one count of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault and one count each of tampering with evidence and burglary after an Aug. 15 attack that sent Roger Stone, 44, to the hospital.

On Aug. 17, Stone told police that he was drinking outside two days earlier in his front yard. The morning after drinking, Stone woke up with injuries to his face and legs and on Aug. 17 was sent to the hospital.

Police said Ayala was drinking with Stone on the night of the alleged attack.

A pretrial hearing on the charges was set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
