ELYRIA — The Business Support Network of First Community Interfaith Institute-Ohio has lofty goals for its organization, but in order to help the area’s poor and homeless learn how to own and operate small businesses, it has to raise funds for the program.
“The poor or homeless who live in Lorain and Elyria are not necessarily skillless, unemployable or not management material,” said Ruth Battle-Evans, executive director of Kanisa House. “Many have skills, ideas, dreams and some are already doing odd jobs, which earn them a little change. What is needed is a support to aid them in selecting a job area, qualifying and quantifying the skills needed and then putting together a business plan that will work for them.”
But instead of simply asking for a handout, the group is looking to entertain supporters and benefactors.
From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, the BSN will hold a musical brunch at the Gathering Hope House, 1173 North Ridge Road, Lorain.
Music will be provided by the Latin Jazz Players, a dynamic and well-known local group.
The donation for tickets is $10 and must be purchased in advanced 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kanisa House II, 142 Cleveland St., Elyria. For more information, call Dana Burns at (440) 366-3244.
