Public meeting to address Griswold Road widening project

ELYRIA TWP. — An 18-month project to widen Griswold Road will be the topic of discussion during a public meeting to allow business owners and residents to learn more about the project and meet the contractor.

Tentatively set to begin in January, the $5 million project will reconstruct and widen Griswold Road between Lake Avenue and Leona Street, adding a third lane for turning. Fabrizi Trucking and Paving Co. Inc. of Cleveland was hired as the contractor and will be on hand to answer questions.

The meeting is 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elyria Township Hall, 41416 Griswold Road.

Bob Klaiber of the Lorain County Engineer’s Office said the meeting will also allow property owners to sign up for real-time updates sent through email through the duration of the project.

“We find these meetings to be important because, in essence, the property owners are getting a new neighbor for 18 months,” he said. “Most people don’t like construction because it’s disruptive, but the hope is to limit the disruptiveness with as much information as possible.”

This will be especially important this summer when Griswold Road is closed for between 75 to 90 days. Work on the CSX railroad crossing will be done at this time and through traffic will not be permitted.

The project will also replace sanitary sewer and water lines paid for by the city of Elyria. That work will commence first.

“A sanitary sewer runs the length of the project, and that is work that can be done in the winter months so we can move onto the paving in the sprint,” Klaiber said.

The project is also being funded through the Ohio Public Works Commission and the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency.

Those who can not attend the meeting can call the Lorain County Engineer’s Office 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday (440) 329-5586 and request to be added to the email distribution list.
