ELYRIA — An Amherst man has been indicted for an Aug. 16 house fire that investigators determined was caused by cooking marijuana.

Drew Ashton, 21, is charged with aggravated arson, arson and illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for manufacture of drugs.

Assistant Lorain County Prosecutor Dave Muhek said Ashton and others were using butane, marijuana and ingredients to create a different delivery method for the drug.

Muhek said that additional charges against others involved in the case are likely.

The fire started about 2:30 p.m. in the garage of a rental house on Lincoln Street across from Olde Town Pizza House. The blaze, which firefighters were able to quickly douse, shut down three blocks.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire after finding multiple aerosol cans of butane gas and a bag of marijuana behind the burned car in the garage.

Amherst police have said the person renting the house admitted that he and a friend were using the butane on the marijuana.
