LORAIN — Cigarette smoking is believed to have caused the Monday fire that killed Vicki Kwasny in her home at 1012 E. Erie Ave.

Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Jeff Fenn said Thursday the official cause of the fire, which began in a second-floor bedroom, is undetermined. However, everything but smoking has been ruled out.

Fenn said the 51-year-old Kwasny, who neighbors said had cancer, was bedridden and a heavy smoker.

“We go through a bunch of hypotheses, and the only one we cannot rule out is smoking in bed,” Fenn said.
