Reports: Indians, ex-Brewers closer John Axford reach deal

John Axford

According to multiple reports, the Indians have agreed to terms with a closer to replace right-hander Chris Perez.

Pending a physical examination, Cleveland has reportedly signed right-hander John Axford to a contract for 2014. It is believed to be a one-year deal, with details expected over the coming days.

Axford, 30, spent most of last season with Milwaukee, appearing in 64 games and compiling a 6-7 record and 4.45 ERA. He was traded to the Cardinals at the end of the year, posting a 1.74 ERA in 13 games.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Axford did not record a save in 2013.

Axford served as the Brewers’ primary closer from 2010-12, compiling 105 saves. His best season came in 2011 when he led the National League with 46 saves, while posting a 1.95 ERA in 74 games.
