William R. Hawkes, Sr., of Lorain, passed away at age 73, Friday, December 13, 2013, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a lengthy battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. Bill was born November 5, 1940, in Commerce, Georgia to the late Jonah R. “John” and Dorothy (nee Langston) Hawkes.
Moving to Ohio at a young age, he attended public schools. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1958, he met and soon married Phyllis Miller. Together they would share 44 years together until her passing in January 2003. Raising five children, he worked various jobs in the industrial sect, retiring from U.S. Steel in Lorain. During his retirement, Bill enjoyed wood working, antiquing, working on his home or in his yard and his dog Starr.
Bill is survived by his son, Bill, Jr. (fiancee Cheryl Taryan) of Lorain; daughters, Cynthia (Christopher) Benge of Lorain, Barbara (Duane) Warner of Apopka, Florida and Judith (James) (friend Bill Haupt) Gettens of Amherst; his brother, Larry O. (Carol) Hawkes of Lorain; sisters, Diane (Carl) Cunningham of Sheffield Village, Sandra Stavesky of Elyria and Elizabeth “Paulette” (Carl Green) Kerpics of Lorain; as well as a host of nieces and nephews; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and his mother-in-law, Thelma (Judson) Lynch of Bradenton, Florida.
Along with his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his niece, Michele in December 1991; and his son, Robert in April 2001; and most recently, an aunt and uncle.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place.
