Mary Magdalene Hammons (nee Bell), 100 years of age, and a resident of Elyria, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria. She was born October 18, 1913 in Birmingham, Alabama. Later in life Mary moved to Elyria and married Roosevelt Hammons.
She was a former member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, usher board and the deaconess board. In the early 70′s, Mary was employed at the Wesleyan Village as a nursing assistant. She enjoyed singing, cooking, reading her Bible and spending time with her family.
Survivors include daughters, Gloria Drummond of Decatur, Georgia, Delores Gaines and her husband Raymond of Elyria; her son, Carl Hammons and his wife Norma of Elyria; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Hammons of Elyria; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 16 great great grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousin and friends.
She was preceded in death by her and her parents, Reverend John Davis and Alberta Bell (nee Williams); her husband, Roosevelt; her daughter, Carol Drake; her son, Ronald Hammons; grandson, Daniel Drake; her brother, John Bell, Jr.; her sisters, Althea Bell, Sarah Bell and Katherine Patterson.
Friends may call Monday, December 30, 2013 from 12 Noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. The Reverend James Timmons, Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
