Stay Safe and Healthy in Winter

Winter storms and extreme cold can be dangerous, but there are ways you can get ready!

  • Update or create an emergency supplies kit that includes food or water for all members of your family for at least 3 days. Add winter-specific items, such as rock salt, a snow shovel, warm clothing, and blankets.
  • Update or create a family communications plan that outlines how you will get in contact with one another and how you will meet up during an emergency.
  • Stay indoors during a storm. If you must go outside, dress appropriately for the weather. It is best to wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight warm clothing as opposed to one layer of heavy clothing. Don't forget your hat and gloves!
  • Prepare your vehicle for wicked weather - Get tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association HERE.
  • Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts. 
  • When using alternate sources for electricity, heating, or cooking, be mindful of the primary hazards - carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock, and fire. 
  • Be prepared to check on family and neighbors who are especially at risk from cold weather hazards: young children, older adults, and the chronically ill. If you have pets, bring them inside or provide them with shelter.
