Deck Preston Murray passed away on Friday, January 3, 2014 at age 63. Deck was born on December 29, 1950 in Alta, Iowa to the late Persis and Preston Murray. He moved to Elyria, Ohio when his father relocated there for business.
Deck graduated from Elyria High School in 1969. He graduated in 1973 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he was a member of the varsity wrestling team and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
Deck had a successful career in sales, sales management and international general management at Procter and Gamble and Tambrands. Subsequently, he was a management consultant at Dechert-Hampe & Company.
After relocating a number of times, early in his career, (Columbus, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Cincinnati, Ohio), Deck and his family moved to Huntington, Long Island, New York, where they lived for 30 years. Deck and his wife, Lois Ann, moved to Columbus, Ohio in September 2012 to be near family, grandchildren and friends.
Deck is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lois Ann Grapes Murray; daughter and son-in-law, Piper and Jim Wright (Columbus, Ohio); son, Preston (Denver, Colorado); and two grandchildren, Brendan and Colin Wright.
Surviving brothers and sisters are Fern and Eric Bowman (Annapolis, Maryland); Dana and Paul Ethridge (Rockville, Maryland); Jill and Jim Taylor (Elyria, Ohio); and Jock and Laura Ann Murray (Raleigh, North Carolina). Other surviving family members are Lois Ann’s siblings, Bill Grapes, Sue Schneider and Patti Tarney.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 10 A.M., in the New Albany United Methodist Church in New Albany, Ohio. A Facebook group “Remembering Deck Murray” has been established for friends to extend messages of remembrance.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to pancan.org, a nonprofit foundation which focuses on research for early detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer.
