Wellington Fire Chief Mike Wetherbee said the freezing temperatures can cause water lines to freeze, so he put out the call for aid.

The fire, which appeared to begin in the basement of a home at 23726 Foster Road, took approximately 45 minutes to control, according to Wetherbee. He said the home’s single occupant called to report the fire about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, and she escaped without injury.

The home is owned by Carlene Smith, according to the Lorain County auditor’s website.

Wetherbee, who could not confirm the woman’s name, said a relative picked her up because the home is uninhabitable. He did not have an estimated cost of damages.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Rochester, Eaton Township, Carlisle, Grafton Township, Litchfield, LaGrange, Spencer and Wellington fire departments responded.
