Woman pleads no contest to blacking out, leaving child

Zimmer

Heather Zimmer

ELYRIA — An Elyria mother pleaded no contest to criminal mischief for a July incident in which she dropped her 1-year-old child off at a home of an old friend and forgot where the child was after blacking out.

Heather Zimmer, 27, was charged with endangering children, but it was reduced as part of an agreement with prosecutors, according to Elyria Municipal Court records.

Zimmer was given a 60-day suspended jail sentence, fined $100 and ordered to obtain alcohol treatment during a hearing Monday.

Elyria police reported that Zimmer called officers to report that she woke up at a Quincy Avenue home and didn’t know where her child was. Witnesses said that Zimmer had been drinking the night before and had her child with her in a stroller.

Tracy Guest, the old friend, who said she hadn’t seen Zimmer in a decade, told police that Zimmer asked her to watch the child and told her she would be right back. Guest said Zimmer never came back and she fell asleep waiting for her.
