Art Daniels Sutton, Sr.

SuttonArtArt Daniels Sutton, Sr., 60, of Elyria, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. He was born on June 22, 1953 in Lorain, to his parents Willie and Helen Sutton, Sr.

He was a graduate of Admiral King High School in Lorain and received his Journeyman designation in Carpentry. Art made Elyria his home where he married his wife of 36 years, Joann Sutton, and raised his three children. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Carpenters’ Local Union #435 of Cleveland, and member of Asbury United Methodist Church of Elyria, where he served as head of the Trustee Board, cleaned and maintained the church and other properties.

Art was well known for his willingness to help others, his strong work ethic, honesty and selflessness. He was regarded as a father to many outside of his three biological children and enjoyed spending time with his family and extended family, in addition to camping, hiking, fishing and leading a Boy Scout group for many years.

Art is survived by his wife, Joann Sutton of Elyria; his children, Amanda and her husband, Matthew Messer of Belvidere, Illinois, Art, Jr. and his wife, Sonya Sutton of Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin and Melissa Sutton of Dallas, Georgia; grandsons, Markel Sutton, Haneul and Hansol Messer; siblings, Lorene Bracy, Kizzy Easley and Willie Sutton, Jr. of Lorain, Michael Sutton of Euclid, Felix Sutton and Duane Sutton of Lorain, Staff Sgt. Kelley Sutton of Fort Carson, Colorado and Cedric Sutton of Lorain; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Helen Sutton, Sr.; a son, Michael Sutton; a granddaughter, Ariel Sutton; brothers, Tom, Jerry and Tommie Sutton; sisters, Stacey Sutton, Roberta Frazier and Margo Evans; father in-law, John Burt, Sr.; great nephew, AJ Gilchrist; and great niece, Maiya Sutton.

Art will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. His legacy will continue on in the lives of his family and friends.

A viewing will be held Friday, January 17, 2014 from 11 A.M. until time of Service at 12 Noon at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1611 Middle Ave., Elyria. Pastor Monique Greenfield will officiate. Interment will be at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria.
