WESTLAKE — After serving a day in jail on a drug possession charge, a 32-year-old man in Westlake City Jail was found dead in his cell Wednesday. The cause of his death is unknown.

Raphael D. Benjamin, 32, of Cleveland, was found in his cell bunk about 1 p.m. Wednesday. Employees at the jail tried to revive Benjamin. The Westlake Fire Department responded to the scene and could find no signs of life.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner are investigating.

Benjamin was arrested Tuesday when police pulled him over for a traffic stop about 1:50 p.m. on Interstate 90 in Westlake. Police said they found hypodermic needles, small bags, a scale and a small amount of marijuana in his car.

Benjamin was charged with an active warrant from Brooklyn, possession of marijuana, possession of criminal tools and driving under suspension.
