WELLINGTON — A fund has been established in honor of Drew Guyer, a 13-year-old who died suddenly in an apparent cardiac event.

Superintendent John Nolan said the fund has to raise at least $10,000 to be considered endowed. The fund has already collected $9,800.

Drew Guyer was an eighth-grader at McCormick Middle School and was playing soccer at Westwood Elementary School when he collapsed Dec. 17.

He was rushed to Mercy Allen Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Nolan said the amount collected in Guyer’s honor is heart-warming.

“This is a community that continues to give and give and give,” he said during a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday. “We’re really appreciative.”

To donate, checks can be made out to the Drew Guyer Fund. Checks can be dropped off at Nolan’s office in care of the Wellington Endowment.
