LaToya “Towa” Ann Fairley, 37, of Columbus and a native of Lorain, passed away peacefully Monday, January 13, 2014 in her Lorain home surrounded by family and friends, following a lengthy illness. She was born November 5, 1976 in Lorain.
LaToya was employed by Columbus City School District as a substitute teacher. She had also worked for Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction at the Marion Correctional Institution as a Correctional Officer. She was a member of Abundant Love Tabernacle in Columbus.
She graduated from Lorain High School and the Ohio State University Young Scholar Program in 1995 and served as the Vice-President of her senior class. LaToya was on the Senior Advisory Board, Dean’s Advisory Board, International Club, and NAACP Youth Council. After graduation she attended the Ohio State University and majored in African American Studies and Criminal Justice and received her Bachelor’s of Arts & Science in 1999. She also attended Ashland University and was only few semesters away from receiving her K-8th grade teaching degree. LaToya received countless awards for her outstanding academic achievements and community service recognition.
She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends attending various outings or just hanging out. LaToya’s favorite past time was capturing photographs of precious memories of her family and friends. She enjoyed learning, writing poems, mentoring and tutoring students, especially those with special needs. LaToya loved children and they all held a very special place in her heart.
LaToya leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Raecyiara “Racey” Edwards of Columbus; son/nephew, Narvarryon “Phat Phat” McAfee of Cleveland; granddaughter Jayasia “Jay Jay” Edwards of Columbus; mother, Coretta Fairley of Lorain; step father, Michael McAfee, Sr. of Columbus; brothers, Anthony Fairley, Michael McAfee, Jr., Christian McAfee and Eddie McAfee, all of Lorain; sister, LaQuecia McAfee of Lorain; aunts, Thelma (Zachary) Anderson of Montgomery, Alabama, Lillie Fairley-Crooks, Sally (Gregory) Fairley-Kimmey, Georgianna (Terry) Holloway, Jackie Fairley, all of Lorain; and uncle, Lloyd (Rochelle) Fairley of Lorain; great-aunts, Mary Gilchrist of Lorain, Fannie Young-Lester of Sheffield Lake and Mabel Templeton of Roosevelt, New York; her life long mentor, Roslyn Valentine; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Anthony Manley; both maternal grandparents, James and Zelma Fairley and James and Ora Mae Manley; uncles, Sol Fairley, Rick Dysart, James Dysart, Sr., Homer Dysart; great-aunts, EvaMay McNeill, Bernice Robinson, Beulah Dysart, and Gracie Lee Basley; four cousins and two second cousins.
The family will receive friends at 2051 Crehore St., Lorain and from 7 to 9 P.M., Friday, January 17, 2014 at Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway, Lorain, (440) 244-1831. The homegoing service will be Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11 A.M. at Living Word Church, 658 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. Pastor Ray Robinson, Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
