Shirley J. Coleman (nee Sands), 81, of Elyria, and formerly of Lorain, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at her home. She was born December 10, 1932 in Lorain, and was a 1951-A graduate of Lorain High School.
She was employed for several years at U.S. Steel and then for 25 years at Lake Terminal Railroad, retiring December 10, 1997. Shirley had been a volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Lorain. She enjoyed roller skating, reading, watching figure skating and was a television fan of Downton Abbey, Doc Martin and Blue Bloods. She was a frequent traveler to Las Vegas, where her favorite pastime was playing the slot machines.
Shirley is survived by daughters, Anne (David) Scott of Vermilion and Linda Hemlinger of Elyria; son, Dana Coleman of Elyria; grandchildren, Shawn and Jack Hemlinger and Michael Scott; and a sister, Ruth Ellen Sands of Tampa, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Georgia Sands; sisters, Lydia Barber and Doris Heldreth; and brothers, Richard, George, John, Charles and Robert Sands.
Friends will be received Tuesday, January 21, 2014, from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M., at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria.
