Columbia Gas installed a backup main line to an area affected by a natural gas outage earlier this month, said a company spokesman.

While calling the outage that hit customers when temperatures were below zero a rare occurrence, a new line was installed as a part of the fix. Spokesman Ray Frank said the new 1,000-foot mainline pipe connects the affected area to another system that is supplied from a different delivery source.

“It was put in place to have a bit of redundancy, an additional source of supply, in the event we will have future issues with the main supplier line,” he said.

About 2,700 affected customers in Eaton Township, Elyria and North Ridgeville lost gas about 9 p.m. Jan. 6.

Service was restored by Jan. 8. Frank said the natural gas delivery from pipeline suppliers was disrupted, causing the outage.
