NORTH RIDGEVILLE — Avon is getting hot just at the right time.

The Eagles won their third game in a row by handing North Ridgeville its second loss of the week. Unlike the Tuesday game the Rangers lost to Bay by two, this one wasn’t even close as Avon used a 21-3 second quarter to capture a 69-56 win Friday night.

Avon improved to 4-10 and 2-7, while North Ridgeville dropped to 4-11, 3-6.

Avon’s Brian Kelly had the hot hand, putting up 30 points with five threes to go with five twos and five free throws.

“I wasn’t looking for anything special, I just let it come to me,” Kelly said. “I took what they gave me.”

North Ridgeville started out well, taking a 14-6 first-quarter lead. But the Rangers went cold as the weather outside in the second quarter, scoring just three points all by Nolan Freeman.

The Rangers went five minutes without a basket to start the quarter.

Avon went into halftime with a 27-17 lead and then opened it up to 33-20 in the first two minutes of the second half as Kelly sank one of his threes to start the third quarter.

The hole became too deep for North Ridgeville to dig out of.

“They shut us off at every lane,” Rangers coach Bryan Morgan said. “We’re not a team that can come back from that big a deficit. We have to stay in the game the entire game. We just don’t have the firepower to get back in it.”

Avon kept the lead at double digits, taking a 37-25 lead going into the final quarter. While North Ridgeville cut the lead to 57-49 with just under three minutes left, it was the closest it could come.

“We came out a little flat in the first quarter, but we woke up and started hitting some shots and getting some good looks,” Avon coach Kevin Sapara said. “I thought our energy level picked up and our guys on the bench did a real good job of getting into the game and staying in the game. We did a good job overall and I’m proud of our guys.”
