ELYRIA — Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire called in at 8:48 p.m. Sunday at a vacant house at 110 Mendel Court.

No one was hurt in the fire, which began in a second-floor bedroom in the northwest corner of the three-story, wood-frame house, Assistant Fire Chief Tim Mitchell said.

He said the fire, which caused about $5,000 in damage, took several minutes to control.

Neighbor Demetrius Allgood said no one has lived in the house since he moved into his home in 2012. However, Allgood said he has seen people standing on the porch in the last few months and believes the house, which appeared to be under renovation, may have been broken into recently.

The 1,408-square-foot house was built in 1900, according to the Lorain County Auditor’s website. The home and property, valued at $52,070, are owned by Silas Buchs of the 3000 block of Cooper Foster Park Road in Vermilion.
