Area sees unusual winter weather phenomenon

BRUCE BISHOP/CHRONICLE

Snow rollers — wind-driven snowballs —  sit in a field off Diagonal Road in Carlisle Township. The unusual shapes are caused by a light coating of ice and a few inches of snow. They are rare because they require wind to roll them into the shape but not so strong that it blows them apart, the National Weather Service said. The winds and light rain Sunday night created the perfect conditions; the rarities have been spotted all over the northern part of the state.
