Elyria, Lorain blotter: Walmart employees nab attempted shoplifter

Friday, Jan. 24

  • 12:46 p.m. — 4300 block Leavitt Road, a man left Wal-Mart without paying for a shopping cart full of items. He was chased down by employees.
  • 7:20 p.m. — 5300 block Oberlin Ave., a man grabbed a coat and purse from a table, and the owner of the items chased him down, pushed him and got them back.

Sunday, Jan. 26

  • 10:44 a.m. — 800 block Rosewood Drive, Krista Smierciak, 23, same address, cited for obstructing official business, driving with a suspended license and a stop sign violation; Walter Wright, 25, same address, cited for wrongful entrustment. Police said Smierciak lied about being in an accident, and Wright allowed her to drive his car despite knowing she didn’t have a valid license.

Monday, Jan. 27

  • 1:06 a.m. — 1000 block Melvyn Lane, a woman said the father of her children saw her boyfriend outside her residence as he drove by. She said he fired four or five gunshots in the air and drove away. Police said they couldn’t find the man or shell casings in the area.
