LORAIN — After receiving a tip that someone was firing guns from an apartment balcony on Sunday, police searched the apartment and said they found shell casings, a stolen gun and a group of people — all of whom said they were blameless.
Police didn’t quite believe them.
Frank Owens III, 21, of Lorain, and Kaitlin Drwal, 24, of Lorain, were charged about 9:45 p.m. Sunday at Drwal’s apartment at 1500 Herbert Drive, after officers decided they were the ones who fired shots from the balcony.
Owens was charged with discharging firearms, receiving stolen property, inducing panic and using weapons while intoxicated. Drwal was charged with discharging firearms, obstructing official business, inducing panic and using weapons while intoxicated.
Police found shell casings near the balcony and a handgun in a kitchen cabinet that had been reported stolen from Elyria in 2011, police said.
Drwal’s 4-year-old child was home as well, according to the police report.
Owens told police that the gun was his and he was carrying it for self-defense. He later admitted to police that he shot the gun from Drwal’s apartment.
Owens was released on bond Monday. Drwal was held at Lorain County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
