Deaconess Janie Corris Lancaster

LancasterJanieDeaconess Janie Corris Lancaster, 97, of Oberlin, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at Welcome Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born October 8, 1916 in Cairo, Georgia.

She worked in Housekeeping at Oberlin College for many years ret. in 1987. Janie was the head of the Deaconess board at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin and served on the Benevolence Fund at the church. She was a member of American Legion #656 Women’s Auxiliary and Missionary Society. Janie enjoyed gardening, baking and spending time with family.

She is survived by her husband, Deacon James Lancaster of Oberlin; daughters, Patricia L.W. Butler of Middleburg Hts., Pamela Biragbara of Strongsville; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn O’Neil of Flushing Queens, New York and Elease Evans of Brooklyn, New York.

She was preceded in death by her father, Owen W. Norwood; mother, Irene Norwood; four sisters and five brothers.

Visitation will be Monday, February 3, 2014 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Cowling Funeral Home of Oberlin. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 11 A.M. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Oberlin, with Reverend Fred L. Bell officiating. There will be a private family burial at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.

In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Assc. or to New Life Hospice of Lorain.
