COLUMBIA STATION — Lutheran West entered Thursday night’s double dual match at Columbia High needing two wins to clinch the regular-season championship in the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division.

Though the Longhorns got a tougher match than expected from the host Raiders, they still accomplished their goal, wrapping up a 5-0 dual-meet season with victories over Oberlin and Columbia.

Lutheran West dominated Oberlin, 66-6, before defeating Columbia, 34-29. Both the Raiders and the Phoenix overcame the losses by defeating Fairview — Columbia winning 35-21, and Oberlin winning, 42-24.

“It means a lot to win it this year, especially since we graduated so many guys last year,” Lutheran West coach David Ressler said. “We can’t fill our lineup because of the numbers, so to me, that makes it more special. We only fill 11 weight classes, and to go 5-0 against our Stripes rivals this year is pretty special.”

Leading the way for the Longhorns was junior Tim Mecklenburg. Normally a 126-pounder, Mecklenburg bumped up to 132 against Columbia and pinned Laszlo Szabados in 22 seconds. Staying at 126, he pinned Oberlin’s Ryan Jones in 25 seconds.

Lutheran West’s James Handwerk also got a pair of quick pins, pinning Columbia’s Shane Garrow in 41 seconds at 152 and Oberlin’s Jacob Lawrie in 17 seconds at 160. Ryan McNamee also went 2-0 with a pin in 2:39 over Oberlin’s Grant Cadenhead at 152, and a 13-0 major decision over Columbia’s Mike Jacobucci at 130.

“We had a little set back at 113 (Jacob Ressler), but he’s just now coming back from a broken nose and he’ll be ready,” Ressler said. “But we’re solid from 113 to 160 — that’s the meat of our lineup. Throw in our 220 (Kristian Bremer), and we’re OK.

“If the matchups work out well, where can wrestle and not give up too many forfeits, we’re going to win our matches. Our guys are good and have been good all year. We’ve got several guys who were undefeated in conference, and we’ve had to bump guys up a class or two just to win these duals. I’m looking forward to seeing what these guys can do at their normal weight class at Saturday’s conference tournament and beyond.”

Lutheran West won 11 matches against Oberlin by either pin or forfeit. The only loss came as a result of a forfeit at 195 to the Phoenix’s Morality Anderson.

Against Columbia, the Raiders and the Longhorns split the six true matches. But Lutheran West won its three with two pins and a major decision, while Columbia had a technical fall and two regular decisions. Both teams gave up two forfeits and had double forfeits in two weight classes.

“I think we’re showing signs of improvement,” Columbia coach Jeff Tullos said. “They’re wrestling more aggressively. They’re finishing their moves. They’re responding to those things that we’re trying to work on in the wrestling room during the week. It paid off during the Fairview dual, and we probably had one too many forfeits in the Lutheran West dual.”

The Raiders’ best individual performance came from 145-pounder Nick Jacobucci. Jacobucci pinned Fairview’s Tyler Cain in 1:54, then picked up a 17-0 technical fall win over Lutheran West’s Adler Vasiloff.
