Ray served in the U.S. Army with the 32nd Armored Division from 1959 to 1962. He worked for York International in Elyria for 10 years; and retired as a Supervisor from Kasper Foundry, following 27 years of service. Ray was a member of Amvets Post #32 and The Elyria United Polish Club. He enjoyed NASCAR and football.
Ray was the loving husband and caregiver to his wife of 52 years, Helga (nee Walther). Additional survivors include a son, James Sword (Amanda) of Elyria; a daughter, Debbie Lawson of Lorain; two grandchildren, Alannah Sword USAF, Shaunta Dennis (Jason); two sisters, Colleen Gregory of Kipton and Barb Sword of Louisville, Kentucky; a brother, Claude Sword of Elyria; and his caretaker at home, Gail Hart.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Della (nee Moore) Sword; five brothers, Matt, Ivel, Delmas, Daniel, Sam; and four sisters, Nancy Jane, Norma Jean Kilby, Magdaline Roush and Linda Joe.
Family will receive friends 4 until 7 P.M., Monday, February 3, 2014, at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria (440)322-4626, where funeral services will be at 11 A.M., Tuesday, February 4, 2014, Reverend Jim Deulley will officiate. Burial will be at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria, where Amvets Post #32 will provide full military honors.
