Helen Vietzen-Howdyshell

Howdyshell_HelenHelen Vietzen-Howdyshell (nee Novak), died at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph, Sunday, February 2, 2014. Helen was born February 24, 1924, in Butler, Pennsylvania. She was raised in South Amherst, and was a graduate of South Amherst High School in 1942. Her first husband, Albert C. Vietzen, Jr. preceded her in death April 3, 1990, after 43 years of marriage.

Helen worked at Ford Motor Company Lorain for 23 years in data processing and with the Traffic Department. She retired in 1980. After her retirement, she also worked as a cashier at Brentwood Golf Course, Grafton, for several years.

Helen enjoyed traveling and enjoyed many winters in Florida. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and watching the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers. She was an avid golfer and had a “hole in one”. A past member of Eastern Star, and the Elyria Women’s Club, she was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church for over 55 years. She was also a volunteer at the former Elyria Memorial Hospital for 35 years.

Helen is survived by her husband, Alvin Howdyshell, of 18 years; her son, Jeffrey Vietzen (wife Sally) of Elyria; her daughter, Susan Twining (husband James) of Cape Coral, Florida; grandsons, Christopher (wife Michelle) of Wellington, and Travis (wife Amanda) of Santa Barbara, California; and three great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Annabel Twining of Wellington, and she was humbled and honored to have her great-granddaughter, Helen Rose Twining of Santa Barbara, California, named after her. Her extended family includes daughter, Roberta (husband, Daniel) English of Rocky River; sons, Dennis (wife Sharon) Howdyshell of Rochester, Michigan and Ronald (wife Carol) of Chelsea, Michigan; and four extended grandchildren, Leah Howdyshell of Madison Heights, Michigan, Marci Howdyshell of Columbus, Kristen Howdyshell of Madison Heights, Michigan, Brett English of Avon Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Magdaline (nee Kowalski) Novak; brothers, Paul, Peter, John, and Harry; and sister, Mary.

Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Tuesday, February 4, 2014, from 3 to 7 P.M. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 5, 2014, 11 A.M., at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 360 Princeton Avenue, Elyria, with Reverend Beth McKee officiating Burial will be in Murray Ridge Cemetery.
