ELYRIA — The Elyria Sports Hall of Fame selected its 43rd class Monday night.
This year’s inductees include Elyria West baseball standout T.J. Staton, Elyria High wrestling state champion Tim Sweigard, Elyria High volleyball and basketball star Jessy Verhoff, Elyria Catholic track sprinter Mike Kozma, Elyria Catholic baseball star David Krol and the 1964 Elyria High football team.
The Hall of Fame will also honor Jim Tomsic, a longtime CYO football coach, with the Distinguished Service Award.
The induction banquet will take place May 3 at the Lorain County Community College’s Spitzer Center. The inductees will also be at a meet and greet at Smitty’s in Elyria on March 23. Information on tickets for the events can be found at ElyriaSportsHallofFame.org.
Staton was a member of the Wolverines’ 1992 state championship team — the only Lorain County baseball team to win a state title — and was named the 1993 State of Ohio Player of the Year. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played 10 seasons of professional baseball.
Sweigard won the 175-pound state championship in 1972, going unbeaten during the regular season and finishing with a 26-2 record. He also was a state placer at 167 pounds in 1971, and played football for the Pioneers.
Verhoff was the first athlete to win the Miss Volleyball (1999) and Miss Basketball (2000) awards — given to the top Lorain County senior in each sport.
She was an All-Ohio first-teamer in volleyball and an All-Ohio special mention in basketball.
Kozma was faster than everyone in Ohio with a 9.62 in the 100 yards before being injured during his senior season. He was a four-time state placer, a four-year letterwinner at Indiana University and a Big Ten champion in the 400-meter relay.
Krol was All-Ohio with a 9-1 record and 0.95 ERA during his senior season in 1986. He was also an honorable mention for the Golden Helmet, and a member of the Panthers’ state championship teams in 1983 and ’84. He went on to pitch for Toledo and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins.
The 1964 Pioneers football team went 9-1, and has numerous Hall of Fame individual members on its roster.
