Kenneth M. Breeden, Jr., 70, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 surrounded by his family. Ken was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 6, 1943. His family relocated to Lorain, where he grew up and attended the local schools.
He loved sports as a kid, especially baseball. He left Lorain High early to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He rose to the rank of Corporal, a Noncommissioned Officer, by the end of his enlistment. He loved being a Marine and he was very proud that his three sons followed his footsteps and joined the Marine Corps – a fact he shared with everyone. He was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps in 1964, he returned to Lorain, where he met and married Patti Sour on November 12, 1965. In 1966, he was hired at U.S. Steel where he worked for the next 31 years until his retirement on August 1, 1997. He was proud to be a steelworker and to be a member of his union, Local 1104.
Ken and Patti moved to Sheffield Lake, where they raised three sons, Chad, Tom and Robb. Ken coached all three boys in baseball, eventually spending 13 years in a variety of positions supporting Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Youth Baseball. He also served on the city’s Park and Recreation Board, ensuring the parks and fields were always ready for baseball.
When his boys transitioned to high school athletics, he became their biggest fans. When budget issues put school athletics in danger of being cut, he ran for and served on the school board.
After his retirement, he relocated with Patti to Marietta, Georgia, to be close to his family. His grandchildren then became his focus, traveling to see them and supporting their activities – to include coaching youth baseball again. Although he lived in Georgia, Ken never stopped rooting for his Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes, watching every game.
In addition to his wife of 48 years, Patti, he is survived by his family: Colonel Chad (Sandy) Breeden of San Diego, California, Thomas (Cindy) Breeden of Decatur, Georgia; Special Agent Robb (Christy) Breeden of Sacramento, California; his grandchildren, Mitch and Kayla of San Diego, Tyler, Sarah and Hannah of Decatur, Maddie, Grady and Emma of Sacramento; brothers, Chick (Dottie) Breeden of Richmond Heights, Ohio, Tim (Nancy) Breeden of Vermilion; and sister, Karen Pound of Lilburn, Georgia; numerous cousins and his faithful dog “Bear”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth, Sr. and Kathryn Breeden; his brother-in-law, Alan Pound; and his best friend, “Jock” the poodle.
The family will greet family and friends Thursday February 6, 2014 from 3 to 9 P.M. at the Sheffield Lake Community Center, 4575 E Lake Rd., Sheffield Lake, OH 44054.
