Lorain police say they nipped father’s plan to get custody in the bud

LORAIN — Until a week ago, a 27-year-old Lorain man had a plan to gain custody of his child: Grow about 30 marijuana plants in his house that he was going to use to “pay for the attorney,” according to a police report.

That plan was thwarted about 2 p.m. Friday when police arrived at his house on the 1900 block of West 11th Street and confiscated the plants.

The man’s name is not being released because he has not yet been charged. Police are drying, testing and weighing the plants to see whether they are marijuana and in what quantity before filing anything, police said.

The investigation started Friday after a woman told police she had to pick up some of her belongings from her ex-boyfriend’s house on West 11th Street. She told police her ex, with whom she has a child, had threatened to kill her, according to police.

He also told her he was growing marijuana to pay for an attorney to help him get custody of their child, according to the police report. Police went with the woman to pick up her belongings.

When police arrived at the house, they said they found two rooms dedicated to growing what they believe is marijuana. In a downstairs dresser, police said they found jars containing possible marijuana. They also found a canvas tent in the attic with what seemed to be marijuana plants growing inside, according to the report.

Along with money and about 30 potential marijuana plants in two rooms, police found lights, venting systems and irrigation systems which they believed the 27-year-old was using to grow the plants, Lorain police Detective Mike Giddich said.

So…if he had made enough money for an attorney he was going to stop? How did he intend to support this child? What an awesome excuse! Truly well thought out.

Busted for growing plants that should be legal. That being said, it was moronic to grow these to get custody knowing if he was caught, he would not have a chance to win custody.
