John S. Popovits, 87, of Jacksonville, Florida and formerly of Elyria died Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Community Hospice of NE Florida Hadlow Center in Jacksonville. Mr. Popovits was born in Elyria on August 15, 1926 and made his home here for most of his life, moving to Florida in 2010.
He was employed as a machinist at Bendix-Westinghouse. He was a member of St. Agnes Church, a life member of Am Vets Post 32, a member of the VFW, Post 1079, and a former member of the United Polish Club. He loved to cook and he enjoyed his garden, growing both vegetables and roses.
He is survived by three daughters, Karen (David) Murry of Elyria, Becky (Daryl) Bishop of St. Johns, Florida and Valerie (Jeff) Wilbur of Columbus; two sons, Michael of Georgia and Thomas of New London; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; he is also survived by one sister, Betty Groh of Elyria.
Mr. Popovits was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Popovits in 2012; grandson, Shane Popovits; and his parents, John and Agnes (nee Tackacs) Popovits.
Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 5 to 8 P.M. Closing prayers will be in the funeral home Friday, February 7, 2014 at 10 A.M. followed by Mass at 10:30 A.M. at St. Agnes Church, 611 Lake Avenue, Elyria, with the Reverend Father Albert Veigas, Pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the VFW Post 1079 will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria.
