On Wednesday, February 12, 2014, Mary Edna (nee Duffy) Sittinger, of Vermilion, passed away following the devastating effects of cancer and its treatment. She was surrounded by her four children in her loving home. She was 73. Born in Albany, New York on April 21, 1940, to parents John E. Duffy and Edna M. (Gotha) Duffy and sister to John J. Duffy, all of Albany, New York, she graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1958. She was married in January 1960 to Robert J. Higgins III, also of Albany, where together they lived until moving to Avon, in 1971 with their four children.
In the 1970′s, Mary was employed at various bookkeeping jobs for the railroad and auto parts industries before she worked for the Elyria Post office in 1981. It is at the post office that she met her second husband, David Owen Sittinger. Having been blessed to find each other, they wed in the spring of 1985. Mary retired after 20 years with the post office in 2001 to spend time with David, where in retirement she worked for Higgins Physical Therapy as an Insurance Specialist from 2003 to 2012.
In 1992, Mary and David moved to Vermilion, where they designed and built their dream home together and became happy residents of Edison Estates. Mary volunteered her time as the Treasurer of the Edison Estates Lot Owner Association from 1997 until her failing health in late 2012.
Mary also volunteered as the Treasurer of Chapter 1592 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association for nearly 10 years up until her illness, and the Vermilion Meals on Wheels organization.
Mary’s life was filled with interests that included designing houses, acting and singing in community theater groups, financial wizardry of any kind, going to movies, word searches and spending time with her vast number of friends. Mary’s ultimate joy and passion was spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate, David O. Sittinger of Elyria (2005); father, John E. Duffy (1978); mother, Edna Mae (Gotha) Duffy (2002); and her brother, John J. Duffy (2013).
Mary is survived by her four children, Kathleen M. (Andrew) Janollari of Avon, Sally A. Higgins of Vermilion, Robert J. (Julie) Higgins IV of Geneva, Ohio and Michael J. Higgins of Raleigh, North Carolina; step daughter, Laura (David) Carter Avon; and step son, Thomas (Sharon) Sittinger; grandchildren, Matthew Schuster of Elyria, Anthony Schuster of Vermilion, Michelle Janollari of Avon; step grandchildren, Erin (Tyler) Randall, Dana, Brett, Kyle and Kory Carter; and three great-grandchildren; she is also survived by her first husband, Robert (Christine) Higgins of Avon.
To celebrate Mary’s life, viewing hours will be held Friday, February 14, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. at Misencik Funeral Home, 36363 Detroit Rd., Avon. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11:30 A.M. Immediately following, interment will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 3700 Center Rd., Avon. A Memorial Catholic Mass will be announced at a later date to be held at St. Mary’s Church, Vermilion.
Under Palliative and Hospice care, the Stein Hospice organization embraced Mary and her children throughout this entire journey. The family encourages that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mary’s memory to this wonderful organization, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky OH 44870.
