Beverly Ann Berry (nee Witt), 85, of South Amherst, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home. Beverly was born November 13, 1928 in Amherst, and was a lifetime resident of South Amherst graduating from South Amherst High School with the class of 1946. Lorain has been her home for the last three years.
She dedicated her life to making a home for her husband and children. In 1957 she and her late husband purchased property on Little Long Lake in Hale Michigan, and built a cottage there, spending half their time in Michigan and South Amherst between 1987 and 1998.
She was a lifetime member of the former South Amherst First United Congregational Church of Christ, serving for many years as a Deaconess, church clerk, and past president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. For many years she served as the troop leader of the South Amherst Pinetree Girl Scouts. In addition, she served in the U.S. Navy Fleet Reserve Auxiliary and was a member of the Cleveland Chief Petty Officer’s Auxiliary. Beverly’s love of bird watching led her to become a member of the Black River and Michigan Audubon Societies. She enjoyed Tole painting and participated in many local handicraft groups. She and her late husband loved to travel and enjoyed many winters together with their friends in the Naples Florida area. By far, her favorite times were those spent with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and family.
Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Holly and Dan Sprague of Delaware, Ohio, Wendy and Howard Akin of Amherst Twp.; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Wilbert F. Berry in 2011; her sister, Ninabelle Kilmer in 1984; and her parents, Herman and Bertha Witt (nee Brill).
Friends may call Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 5:30 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 1:30 P.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. John Butchko, Pastor of Westlake United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
