OBERLIN — The cause of a fire that destroyed six municipal trucks early Saturday remains under investigation but is believed to have been accidental, City Manager Eric Norenberg said Sunday.

The fire at the garage at 528 Hillcreek Drive, off Oberlin Road just north of state Route 511, is believed to have caused at least $1.5 million in damage. Besides the garbage and recycling trucks, Norenberg said it also destroyed a forklift and tires.

Norenberg said borrowed trucks will be used to collect trash Tuesday. There is no collection today because of the Presidents Day holiday. Norenberg said residents can put out recycling with their trash, but it’s uncertain if it will be recycled.

Plans to deal with the fire are expected to be discussed at the City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
