ELYRIA — The BP gas station at 402 East Bridge St., temporarily closed due to structural issues.

Concerns with the station’s canopy prompted the station’s owners to close the station while repairs are completed.

Kevin Brubaker, a supervisor in the city’s Building Department, said he was notified Wednesday afternoon by police that it appeared as if one of the canopy’s main supports was bowing. An inspection of the gas station showed some stress that likely was due to snow weight, Brubaker said.

The city did not close the station, but the owners chose to close and barricade the station as a precaution.

“It is not in imminent danger of collapsing,” Brubaker said.

It is not known when the station will reopen.

Brubaker said the Building Department is not aware of any other snow-related building issues. Businesses with flat roofs are especially encouraged to remove snow and ice from rooftops, if possible.

News reports a lot of these station canopy s get blown over.
You would think that when the design then, that they would have more that one center support so it couldn’t tip-over or collapse.
