INDIANAPOLIS — The boss confirmed it.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam told USA Today the team tried to trade for 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh before hiring Mike Pettine on Jan. 23.
“There was an opportunity there, and it didn’t materialize,” Haslam told USA Today Sports on Sunday.
Profootballtalk.com reported Friday the Browns nearly traded for Harbaugh, who’s led San Francisco to the NFC championship game in all three of his seasons. The report said Harbaugh nixed the deal that would’ve sent multiple picks to the 49ers.
Haslam didn’t elaborate on why the trade didn’t happen.
San Francisco CEO Jed York and Harbaugh denied the initial report.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said a first-round pick wasn’t part of the compensation.
