The girl was crossing the street to get mail when struck by a westbound box truck, said fire Lt. Michael Panehal. Panehal, who wouldn’t identify the girl, said the truck driver swerved to avoid her, but the truck’s passenger’s side mirror hit her.
Panehal wouldn’t detail the girl’s injuries, but said she was conscious after being struck. The girl was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
Police Sgt. George Ruple also wouldn’t identify the girl or give her condition. Metro will not give victim’s conditions without names. Ruple said the girl is from Wellington and was visiting relatives.
Ruple said the driver was an 18-year-old Amherst man, but wouldn’t identify him or the company he was working for. Ruple said the driver hadn’t been charged Tuesday, but the accident remains under investigation.
