ELYRIA — A forensic psychologist has determined that a 90-year-old Avon man accused of killing his sick wife in 2008 is competent to stand trial on aggravated murder and other charges.
Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Mark Betleski accepted James Eisenberg’s report on Robert Shaw in a docket entry filed Tuesday.
Shaw called 911 on Nov. 13, 2008, and reported that he had smothered his 84-year-old wife, Virginia Shaw, with a pillow or blanket. Shaw told police that he killed his wife “to put her out of her misery” because she had been in and out of the hospital with various medical problems.
Shaw, who has had his own medical issues, has been free on bond for several years while awaiting trial, which is scheduled for June 24, according to court records.
