Michael R. Fallis, 90, of Lorain, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain, after a short illness. He was born August 22, 1923 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Mike graduated from Lorain High School. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the escort carrier USS Rudyerd Bay and saw action in the capture and occupation of Southern Palau Islands, assaults on the Philippine Islands and the attacks on Luzon. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 5 Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Star, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and WWII Victory Medal. Mike worked at U.S. Steel in Lorain in central maintenance as a pipefitter for 43 years retiring in 1985.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain and was a life member of VFW Post #451, AMVETS #47, IAV #1 and the American Slovak Club, all in Lorain. Mike enjoyed dancing, singing, gardening, traveling and carpentry. He always looked forward to attending the annual reunion of his Navy shipmates.
He is survived by his children, Michele (Tom) Wanek of Amherst, Myra Falisz of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Mitchell (Vivian) Fallis of Lorain; grandchildren, Thomas (Lydia) Wanek of Amherst and Todd (Adrienne) Wanek of Shreveport, Louisiana and great grandchildren, Olivia, Eva and Natalie Wanek.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mihaly and Mary Falisz (nee Stuhan); brother, Joseph Fallis; and sister, Pauline Palka.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 28, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain, where the Parastas Service will be held Friday at 7 P.M. The Divine Liturgy will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 10 A.M. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th St., Lorain (please meet at the church). The Rev. Nicholas Rachford, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors.
