Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right!

 “Healthy Eating is part of the foundation for good health and disease prevention,” reminds Lorain County General Health District Health Commissioner David Covell, RS, MPH. Most of us want to “enjoy the taste of eating right” continues Covell and that enjoyment often includes some of our favorite comfort foods. With a few changes comfort foods can be made so that they include more nutrition. The substitution charts below show ingredients that can be changed in comfort food favorites like meatloaf, creamy mac and cheese, and brownies.

Recipe Tips: 

Instead of... Try This!
Regular Pasta Whole wheat pasta
Ground Chuck Use ground sirloin or lean ground turkey breast 
No Vegetables  Add chopped vegetables to add flavor and moisture 

 

Cooking Tips: 

Instead of... Try This!
1 egg 2 egg whites or ¼ cup of liquid egg substitute

Whole Milk

Fat free or reduced fat milk
1/2 cup of butter or margarine  ¼ cup applesauce + ¼ cup of canola oil
