BROWNHELM TWP. — The first mention of a barn fire Friday brought neighbors, family friends and FFA students to the scene to support the family whose animals perished in the fire.

A barn fire at 8144 Claus Road on Friday killed 26 show goats.

A barn fire at 8144 Claus Road on Friday killed 26 show goats.

The blaze, which started about 1:30 p.m. in a barn at 8144 Claus Road in Brownhelm Township, burned through the structure and resulted in the deaths of 26 show goats, the South Amherst Fire Department reported. About 40 goats were in the barn when the fire started.

Fire departments from Amherst, South Amherst, Vermilion, Vermilion Township and Florence Township put out the fire within three hours.

The fire caused about $60,000 damage, said a South Amherst Fire Department official, adding that the damage estimate took only the building into account, not the animals inside.

However, firefighters weren’t the only ones at the barn Friday. Many neighbors and members of the 4-H and FFA communities who heard about the fire quickly arrived to provide support.

“It’s a good, tight community,” said Shelly Hill, a neighbor and friend of the family.

Hill and others said they plan to continue to support their friends and longtime neighbors in the weeks to come.

“We’ll find ways,” Hill said.
