BROWNHELM TWP. — The first mention of a barn fire Friday brought neighbors, family friends and FFA students to the scene to support the family whose animals perished in the fire.

A barn fire at 8144 Claus Road on Friday killed 26 show goats.

A barn fire at 8144 Claus Road on Friday killed 26 show goats.

The blaze, which started about 1:30 p.m. in a barn at 8144 Claus Road in Brownhelm Township, burned through the structure and resulted in the deaths of 26 show goats, the South Amherst Fire Department reported. About 40 goats were in the barn when the fire started.

Fire departments from Amherst, South Amherst, Vermilion, Vermilion Township and Florence Township put out the fire within three hours.

The fire caused about $60,000 damage, said a South Amherst Fire Department official, adding that the damage estimate took only the building into account, not the animals inside.

However, firefighters weren’t the only ones at the barn Friday. Many neighbors and members of the 4-H and FFA communities who heard about the fire quickly arrived to provide support.

“It’s a good, tight community,” said Shelly Hill, a neighbor and friend of the family.

Hill and others said they plan to continue to support their friends and longtime neighbors in the weeks to come.

“We’ll find ways,” Hill said.

    Awwww… so sorry :-(

  • Mary Jane Papp

    what started the fire?

  • Mad Junk

It’s always so tragic when animals die before their owners can kill and eat them!

    • michelle

      asshat.

    • Nicole

Seriously? You don’t know these people or what they do with their animals, so shut up Mad Junk. I do know them and these were show goats, not animals being raised for slaughter. Didn’t your mother teach you if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all????

      • Joe Smith

So I guess if you practiced what you preached, you would not have said anything at all.

        • Nicole

Really? Sad world we live in these days…..

          • Joe Smith

Yes, it is sad that you jump on someone doing the same thing that you jumped on them for.

You said if you had nothing good to say, you shouldn’t say anything while telling him to shut up and cutting on how his mother raised him.

Was that something good to say?

It is called being a hypocrite.

I see nothing wrong with her reply. If anything she showed restraint in replying to an ignorant troll.

          • Joe Smith

I did not say she was not justified in replying, I am saying she should not quote “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all” by telling someone to shut up and implying his mother didn’t raise him right.. She should practice what she preached by either not saying something if she couldn’t say anything nice or not make a righteous quote while breaking that same quote in the process.

She was doing a do as i say, not as I do kind of thing.

Sorry to hear about the fire and the loss of the goats.
