Velma R. Goodin-Thorpe (nee Bowens), 67, of Elyria, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain, following a short illness. She was born February 4, 1947, in Mount Holly, Arkansas.
Velma graduated from Elyria High School, Class of 1965. She was a member of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church in Elyria. She was employed at General Electric in Oberlin, Majestic Molding in Elyria, and retired from Invacare. She enjoyed dancing and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Goodin-Thorpe is survived by her husband, Kenneth Thorpe, Sr. of Elyria; son, Galen Goodin of Elyria; grandchildren, Deji’ Goodin, Kristen McQuary, Antwaan Harrison and Aaron Goodin; her mother, Velma Bowens of Elyria; sister, Genevieve Bowens- Todd of Elyria; brothers, Larry Bowens and Raymond Bowens of Elyria, James Bowens, Jr. of Dayton; aunts, Ophalia Pierce of Elyria and Zoreta Dean of Little Rock, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Bowens, Sr.; and sister, Telethia McIntosh.
Friends may call from 11 A.M., until the time of the funeral service at 12 Noon, Monday, March 10, 2014, at Unity Missionary Baptist Church, 326 Fuller Road, Elyria. Reverend Willie Gardner, Pastor, will officiate.
